As we wave goodbye to 2022 (which is a bittersweet feeling we have to admit) and say hello to a new year full of new trends and themes for weddings, we thought it would only be right to explore one of our favourite upcoming trends of 2023: unusual wedding rings! Whether you’re looking for a more classic style with a unique twist or you’re looking for a piece of jewellery completely outside the box, you’ll be happy to know that there is a wide variety of rings available for you to search for and try!
Here is our guide to buying unusual wedding rings (e.g. what makes a ring unusual and where to buy them from), as well as 60 of our favourite pieces to help your search, perfect for your 2023 wedding:
What Makes a Wedding Ring Unusual?
Over the years, couples have become accustomed to a more traditional style of ring which tends to be a rather simple looking band with a beautiful diamond of some sort. As the years have gone by, jewellers have started to experiment with the types of gemstones/ and styles of band they use for their pieces, and that is what makes a wedding ring unusual – experimenting! If you were to narrow it down to certain factors that make a wedding ring stand out and things you should look out for when choosing your own wedding ring for your big day, we’d say it comes down to:
- Type of stone used in the ring: Gemstones such as opal, emerald, ruby and sapphire come in all different colours, shapes and sizes, and choosing a ring with a more unique gemstone is a sure-fire way to make sure you stand out from the crowd.
- Cut of the stone: A more traditional cut of stone used in rings tends to be either square-shaped or a circular classic cut of the diamond. However, in recent years, jewellers have started to craft more unique wedding rings by using more unusual cuts of stone such as diamond-shaped or oval-shaped rings.
- Metal Used For Wedding Band: Silver and gold are most commonly used in traditional wedding rings, so try going for a less common type of metal like rose gold or white gold for your ring. Or try a textured metal to make it really unique!
How Much Should I Be Looking To Spend On A More Unusual Ring?
The answer to this question is definitely subjective, as the price of the wedding ring you buy may vary depending on your wedding budget and how much you’re willing to spend. When it comes to wedding budgets, many couples tend to give themselves a bit of wiggle room with the cash they put aside for their wedding jewellery in case the pieces they like are slightly more expensive than they anticipated.
According to, Patrick Adair from @patrickadairdesigns, the general ‘rule of thumb’ when it comes to wedding ring buying is spending/putting aside two months worth of your salary to spend on wedding day jewellery. To some, that is more than feasible, however, for many, it simply isn’t and that is absolutely fine! Ultimately, you should spend however much you feel comfortable on your wedding ring. Although, please keep in mind that more rare gemstones tend to be slightly more expensive so you should look out for offers that are available to you for special discounts!
Where/How Can I Find Creative, Unusual Wedding Rings?
Now that buying and selling more unique wedding rings has become more popular, most jewellers have a section on their website (or in-store) where they sell ‘one of a kind’ pieces to their customers. So look out for those sections when looking for your modern, unusual ring. Just as a word of advice, asking for different cuts or kinds of gemstones in wedding rings will almost guarantee you’ll create a unique piece of jewellery. However, we have put together a list of some of our favourite pieces for inspiration when looking for rings that are personal to you.
