Most of you will know, or could guess, that the ‘Saffron’ part of this lovely old town’s name came from the growing of that flower for food use and to support the local cloth industry as the basis for a dye. But did you know that this hugely expensive spice was or is also (reputedly) an aphrodisiac. Something to bear in mind if the wedding celebrations have been a bit taxing. This is a very lovely spot, with plenty of ancient buildings, a couple of old inns particular adornments, and a rather beautiful if much altered 15th century church. One of the loveliest towns in England.
