You might expect a place like Portpatrick tucked away on the western side of the Rhins of Galloway to tend toward the chilly, but the Gulf Stream brings a touch of warmth to the place. That westward aspect also gives the village some marvellous views across to the Northern Irish coast, something to be enjoyed as you stroll the beach or cliff-top paths. And this quiet backwater has quite a romantic heritage that may attract those planning weddings, as it was once known as the Gretna Green for Ireland, greeting eloping couples from across the water and not in those distant days paying too close attention to the formalities of banns and suchlike usually required before tying the knot.
