Over the centuries Hoxton has had several different incarnations: in Tudor times it was famed as the district where so many foreign ambassadors resided, thus boasting many fine mansions; in the Victorian age the wealthy had been displaced by the industrial poor as what had been an airy spot was built-up. For the last 20 years or so Hoxton has been a trendy quarter populated by an artistic crowd, fashionable and (they hope) cutting edge, thus the area is replete with bars, cafes and galleries.
