It may be miles from the sea, but Beith’s location between the Ayrshire coast and Glasgow led to it becoming a noted centre for smugglers – daring enough to raid the local customs house to recover confiscated contraband. If that’s not romantic enough for you, consider its most famous son, Alexander Montgomerie, writer of sonnets and eventual outlaw. The town is less famed for lawlessness these days, a quiet and pleasant place with a fine 16th century Kirk and – a good omen for those contemplating their wedding day this – a history of silk making for many years.
