The feel

A stunning setting for your Wedding and Celebrations. And the guests tell

us the Service is as great as the House!

My Great, Great Grandfather and Great, Great Grandmother bought Springkell in 1894, 120 years ago. They bought it as a Winter Shooting Estate just over the border and into Scotland. The Heron-Maxwells, who now live in Cornwall, sold it to us, and they had lived here since 1734. We are still in touch with them.

Springkell itself is a Palladian House. Built from 1734 the large wings were added in Georgian times in 1818. The massive windows in the ballroom, wedding room and bar were small panes to begin with but as soon as Pilkington invented float glass the larger panes were installed. The house faces south and looks over 11 acres of gardens, mainly laid to lawn, and over the Langlands (long lands) field via a classic ‘ha-ha’. This is a hidden wall so it looks like the lawns go on forever when in fact the ha-ha divides the lawn from the field.

At 27,000 square foot (a large London house is 2,700 square foot) Springkell is some size. There are some lovely large rooms from the black and white marble hallway with 4 Italian Marble Columns, via the Portrait Gallery, to the Wedding Room on your right, and over to both the Ballroom and Bar on your left and both south facing.

By choosing to have your Wedding at Springkell you are helping to preserve the history and architecture of Scotland and the United Kingdom. I was lucky enough to be given the house and 700 acres by my father just over 5 years ago. In the intervening period I have sold 600 acres and refurbished the house and cottages to a very high standard in the process spending over 2 million.

When you step into Springkell you will feel how lovely it is straight away.

And something you can’t tell except when you visit is how friendly, informal and welcoming the house is. Guests love it here and the Weddings and Parties go well – really well. Have a look at Springkell House on Facebook where we are five star rated.

Word of mouth recommendations are picking up strongly which is nice.

I am proud to say that all the workmanship, with one exception, is local. And the materials, again with one exception, are sourced and purchased locally. The new windows, bar and locks are from Bruce McGarva in Dumfries, building materials from Dumfries Timber, cement from Grange Quarry in Lockerbie, carpets from Galloway Carpets in Annan, plumbing by Johnston & Clark of Dumfries, electrical work by local electricians, skim plaster work by Dalgleish and Wilson in Eaglesfield.

Our philosophy at Springkell is: ‘It’s your wedding’ so we pride ourselves

in working hard to meet your needs. Whatever you want we try to organise. If you want something I try to say yes!

So what’s special about getting married at Springkell?

1. It’s a beautiful house so your photographs will be even more amazing

2. Recently restored to the highest specification so you have a lovely old

house (1734) with modern interiors – the best of both worlds

3. Owned by the same family for 120 years and

4. On your big day your own Springkell Wedding coordinator will be there

looking after you and your whole Wedding to ensure it goes brilliantly

5. 100 acres of grounds with great views and

6. Large colourful gardens – peaceful and scenic

7. Choose to marry inside in the Wedding Room with its 2.5 metre mirror and surrounded by Italian marble or

8. Outside in the Round Garden – serene and stunning but not great in the winter!

9. It’s one of the most beautiful houses in the world and

10. Our Head Chef is ex Marco Pierre White and is highly rated. Whatever food you like we can cook it for you.

The five star rating is from brides, grooms and guests who also praise our service. Our waitress team is looked after by Anne who spent several years at the Marine Hotel in Troon, a five star hotel. Our service is brilliant and ensures that your day goes brilliantly.

I would love you to have your Wedding and Reception here. Please note that we try not to be too expensive!

We have had Weddings here where the bride and groom only saw Springkell on their Wedding Day – from India, from Malaysia, from Australia. All these Weddings went brilliantly.
