The westernmost major town in England, the mild and frequently sunny climate enjoyed by Penzance is witnessed by the exotic plants found in various gardens grand and otherwise here, some rather incongruous sights such as an old English church with palms in the churchyard make it a memorable place. Nobody can guarantee the weather, but hereabouts you have an edge. Penzance has a past filled with incident, and not a little romance – it was a smugglers’ haunt for centuries, was invaded by the Spanish in 1595, and in the Middle Ages was a major port for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.
