The cosy little town of Crickhowell nestles in the Usk Valley, with the Black Mountains northwards and the Brecon Beacons to the west. That feeling of being protected is helped by its ancient castle standing guard above the place. There is something slightly – pleasingly – quirky about it too, epitomised by the strange design of its 17th century stone bridge. Though easily accessed thanks to its position on the A40, this is definitely rural, the countryside dotted with fine old mansions, many now hotels, the countryside inviting to those who love extreme sports, or those who are just extremely in love.
