A Saxon foundation that rather rarely has retained the original spelling of its name since the days when the son of Alfred the Great established a fortified settlement here, Witham is a place with plenty of character. As so often some of that character comes from its church, a largely 14th century structure, but is also seen in various Georgian houses and a few of earlier date. A healthy start to a marriage is no bad thing, so maybe the town’s past as a (albeit briefly) a fashionable spa is worth bearing in mind.
