As might be expected from its situation at the edge of the lovely Weald of Sussex the now quiet village of Ticehurst is a pretty one, and rather genteel. A far cry from the mid-18th century when it like neighbouring Hawkhurst was a notorious smuggler centre – aptly given the reason you are visiting this site the smugglers were known not just for bringing in spirits, but also that necessity for so many wedding dresses, lace. Not that a bit of brandy would go amiss to still the nerves of some big day participants – good news there is no shortage of pubs here then, given the smugglers are long gone.
