For Tain, a town of fewer than 4000 souls, to have produced a Saint, a Prime Minister (of New Zealand), and the inventor of the ATM there must be something in the water. An alternative explanation, except for the saint who dates from earlier times, may be the blessed influence of the water of life distilled at nearby Glenmorangie. Though it is well out of the way Tain is still on the railway, a boon for anyone arriving for the wedding from beyond the Highlands. Not that its location is anything but a positive, with Dornoch Firth to one side, Tain Hill and Morangie Forest the other.
