For a town of only about 7000 souls Southwell can boast a particularly fine and large church, its Norman Minster in fact a cathedral. The twin-towers of the west front are really lovely, with something almost Italian about them. That building and others like Burgage Manor, where Byron spent many holidays, make this a characterful and visibly affluent spot. It has two great claims to fame too – it was here Charles I surrendered to the Scots (in a pub); and that the Bramley Apple was developed – now there’s an idea for something apposite for the wedding breakfast
