There’s no doubting that Scunthorpe itself is a town made by industry, although as the signs indicate as one enters the place it has more than its fair share of green space, thanks perhaps to the way it was formed by the merging of five villages in the Victorian iron and steel boom. In spite of that plentiful urban greenery the contrast with the surrounding agricultural lands (the town’s crest tellingly bears a wheat-sheaf) is still a marked one: a short distance beyond the town boundaries and you’re amongst arable fields, parkland, and woods, with the Trent and Humber adding to the scenic splendour. The two sources of wealth, iron and agriculture, bequeathed the town and its surrounds some fine buildings, several of which now provide it with equally fine wedding venues.
