Salisbury is a new city, but only in relative terms, its foundation in the 13th century the result of a quarrel between church and military authorities in Old Sarum nearby. The cathedral around which the city grew is one of our loveliest, framed by its decidedly beautiful close, and contains two wonderful artifacts, an original copy of Magna Carta and the oldest clock in the kingdom. The city itself has many graceful old buildings, their beauty matched by the varied countryside within which Salisbury sits – to the north side its eponymous plain, southwards Cranbourne Chase and the New Forest. City or country, a fine place to choose as a wedding venue.
