The three rivers that meet in Rickmansworth – the Gade, the Colne and the Chess – have for centuries been the focus of the town, and for long dictated much of the landscape, with lakes and water-meadows and indeed the Grand Union Canal adding to that watery feel. With the meandering High Street adorned by Georgian buildings it is a charming place too. And when you consider that it was where the answer to life, the universe and everything was found – at least in the Hitchhiker’s Guide it was – you may have added respect for it, or even better a little smile.
