Port Talbot and its vast tidal harbour sit on the eastern rim of Swansea Bay, facing Wales’s second city across its waters, and beyond that the famous Mumbles Head. The town itself developed as numerous smaller settlements expanded and merged into one another, and even today the separate districts have retained their own characters, their individuality proof against the changes to the industries that have dominated the economy here at one time and another. The character flows into the people too, with dashing figures like Richard Burton and Sir Anthony Hopkins associated with it – along with perhaps rather less romantic ones like Geoffrey Howe.
