Perth was a city, then wasn’t, and now is again, though in the eyes of its inhabitants its status had never changed. It is known as The Fair City too, partly because it is a fine settlement in a fine setting, but also thanks to its association with one of Scott’s heroines, as so often a figure from history too, the Fair Maid of Perth. John Knox who railed against the decoration of the Kirk in Perth was not known for his love of fun, and would have frowned on the amenities here today, even perhaps the re-instated Stone of Scone at Scone Castle, probably its curling centre, and certainly its characterful racecourse. But then he probably was not too welcome at weddings or parties of any sort.
