The ancient market town of Penrith sits at the edge of the Lake District National Park, so with the Lakes scenery to one side – Ullswater stretching south west from just a few miles beyond the outskirts of the town – and the Eden Valley and the fells beyond it on the other. It may sit apart in one way, but the town has strong connections with the writers Scott, Coleridge and Wordsworth (part of whose childhood was lived here) rivalling those of its more visited neighbours, keeping its attractions for the knowledgeable and discerning – the Georgian church, the brooding ruins of Penrith Castle and the rather more romantic ones of Brougham Castle.
