Ongar, or more formally Chipping Ongar, is that rare thing a place that used to be more a part of the ever expanding capital than it is now, its tube station closed in the 1990s. As the name implies this is an old market town (Chipping is derived from the Anglo-Saxon for market), that status witnessed by the network of old roads leading to it, and its wide main street. The Saxon connection doesn’t stop there either, the adjacent village of Greensted-juxta-Ongar containing a wonderful survival – in parts – of that period, its wooden church of St Andrew.
