Among its other accolades, Lymington was not so long ago named the best town on the coast by a TV channel, thanks no doubt to a winning combination of the scenery above it, the sea before it, and the architecture within. The occasional cobbled street, some Regency and Georgian buildings of consequence, and excellent amenities do go to make a fine town. A seaport for centuries, though now mainly for leisure sailors plus ferries to the Isle of Wight, Lymington has a touch of historical romance to it as well with tales of smugglers, pressgangs and hidden tunnels.
