The 15th century Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of that most romantic figure of the Tudor and indeed Stuart age, Mary Queen of Scots, though we would hesitate to promote her as a role model for your marriage. The palace is now in ruins, but it like many buildings here in rather better repair gives this royal burgh an historic and cultivated air. Locals will of course know the place well and have their own feel for it, but anyone new to the town may be interested in its motto: ‘St Michael [its patron saint] is kind to strangers’.
