The Aberdeenshire town of Ellon is thriving, thanks in no small part to the granite city itself being a short drive distant, and of course to the money flowing from the North Sea oil industry. But Ellon has managed to retain much of its natural charm, the River Ythan the greatest contributor to that rare quality. There are riverside walks, a wonderful bridge built in the Georgian period and still in use, and for the sharp-eyed the wildlife in, on and above the waters. And of course there is the obligatory ruined castle to add a touch of history and élan.
