The small market town of Driffield sits at the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, one of the most charming but strangely little-known areas of England’s countryside, the town somehow like the country in which it stands rather self-effacing: a pretty church, a pleasing location by its eponymous canal, and a small high street. A solid, rooted sort of place, qualities that most would be happy to transfer to their future marriage, though with a touch of whimsy about it too – witness the local New Year’s tradition of ‘scrambling’ – kids getting goodies from shopkeepers in return for reciting an ancient rhyme – still observed to this day.
