Mary Queen of Scots, Scotland’s ultimate tragi-romantic figure lived in the castle here for a time; Burns wrote a song about it after his own stay; and Turner was moved to sketch its glen. So there is a certain pedigree to romance in Dollar. The setting of the town does nothing to detract from that either: its glen is a noted scenic spot, the Ochil Hills provide a dramatic presence northwards – the 2000 feet high King’s Seat Hill looming a mile or so northwest – and the River Devon snakes past the town to the south.
