‘I grow and I rejoice,’ is Crawley’s motto, well chosen words (though borrowed from a Roman philosopher) for a place that has so successfully combined an original settlement of some antiquity with a planned New Town element. That means there are some characterful old buildings, including a medieval church, cheek by jowl with dramatic expressions of baby-boomer confidence. This is a prosperous spot too, thanks in no small regard to its proximity to Gatwick Airport – great for your honeymoon getaway then! – with its leisure and retail amenities in keeping with such a status. And it’s an airy place too, with its arterial Boulevard inside and the greenery of St Leonard’s Forest outside.
