Clitheroe is the capital of the Ribble Valley, gentleman farmer and these days perhaps slightly less gentlemanly footballer territory. North of the town the glowering moors look over it, and to the west lurks Yorkshire, but the castle ruins seem to defend the place from any threats offered by either. This is a wonderful (and rather posh) market town, with a marvellous wine merchant to sort out your drinks, and some excellent restaurants, hotels and hostelries benefitting from the fine produce locally – beef and lamb especially. A delightful wedding venue with loads of character and unpretentious style.
