What was once a fishing village and agricultural community – the very name means cheese farm – is now a rather upmarket West London suburb once described by Pevsner as having the relaxed informal mood of a market town. What has not changed about the place over the years is the importance of its position on the River Thames. The river here is famous for its part in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, and the riverside has some very pleasing spots indeed – but then so does the centre, with some splendid old pubs: the place for reducing the stress levels of your wedding perhaps?
