The very origins of the town of Camberley are connected to romance and marriage – the Royal Military Academy built nearby required a settlement to provide a stopping place for those visiting the officers, and a place of entertainment for the cadets, their eligibility meaning marriages with local girls and those brought there in hope of such outcomes were regular occurrences. Sir John Betjeman poked gentle fun at the lovesick young officers of his era falling for the likes of Joan Hunter-Dunn. The place has developed other elements of course, and these days has excellent amenities for a town of around thirty thousand.
