There is something rather solid about the old mill town of Bury, thanks to the grandeur of its Town Hall, a splendid Art Gallery (home to some exceptional paintings by the way), the Fusilier Museum, and the heritage East Lancs Railway. Its famous market is regularly voted the best in Britain, the rich produce of the region – not least its wonderful black puddings – helping make it special. With Manchester on its southern doorstep (accessible by fast tram) and hilly moors to the north, Bury has an interesting hinterland too, several grand houses once owned by the area’s old industrial magnates now converted to country house hotels.
