Ignore the rather less than favourable omen that the first part of the town’s name derives from an Old English word for battle-axe – we’re sure that isn’t the case and never will be with you – and focus instead on the lovely romantic traditions associated with the place. There’s the celebrated way that the centuries old fair is opened, with a stuffed glove holding flowers that is hung from the Guildhall; and the reputedly fine spiced ale served then; or the famous wine-cooked pears with clotted cream enjoyed since medieval days. And if you are looking for atmosphere in your wedding venue then the River Taw and coast to one side and Exmoor another should fit the bill.
