With the strange logic of the English countryside little Axbridge is a town while larger neighbour Cheddar is a village, and long may it stay so, such anomalies help keep a smile on our faces. At the south-western edge of the Mendip Hills, with Cheddar Reservoir close by and sited on the River Axe the town’s location is a decidedly pretty one, yet it is also easily accessed thanks to the M5 passing a few miles westwards. There is as you’d hope and expect too a lovely old church – 13th century – complete with a ring of six bells, the oldest dating from 1723.
