It’s rather a pity that perhaps the best-known ‘romantic’ piece of Ampthill’s history concerns the end of a marriage, rather than the beginning of one: Catherine of Aragon lived in the town for several years as Henry VIII engineered their divorce. For contemporary couples it’s a splendid spot from which to start out on married life either in Ampthill itself, blessed with some fine old cottages and pubs, and more than its fair share of Georgian buildings, or in nearby settlements like Flitwick, Cranfield and Bedford.
