The village of Aberlady sits on its own bay on the Firth of Forth, where once it played the role of port to the larger Haddington a few miles inland. With a pleasant sandy beach and famous wetland bird reserve, it is a scenic spot of some note, but there is a rather mystical side to the place as well: in the early days of Christianity on these shores it served as a mid-point between the religious houses on Iona and Lindisfarne, with many pilgrims passing through it in those turbulent times.
