The feel
Derby’s stunning Silk Mill building stands on the site of the world’s first factory and arguably the birth of the Industrial Revolution in 1721. It is also the southern gateway to the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Being one of the wonders of the world, it attracted a lot of interest from around the world, including Benjamin Franklin, founding father of America, who visited the Mill in 1771 and was so awe struck that he took the concept to America.
Originally built to house machines for twisting silk together to make threads, the Silk Mill has an exciting early history. The design of the machines was copied by John Lombe, during a period he spent in Italy, working within the Italian Silk Industry. Now the Silk Mill is Derby’s most iconic building and has been transformed into a museum housing the city’s priceless collection of industrial heritage.
The ground floor is a flexible space that can cater for 150 people. With stunning riverside views, it is the perfect venue for your wedding.
