You are guaranteed to make a grand red-carpet entrance from the moment you set foot in the Town Hall. As you pass through our ornate cast iron gates, the Entrance Hall transpires, dominated by an Italian marble staircase and a striking statue of Queen Victoria. Light streams through stained glass windows which tell the story of Colchester’s remarkable history. It is the perfect setting for photographs capturing the start of your celebration.
The Moot Hall
The largest of our rooms which can seat up to 200 people, the Moot Hall, is resplendent with baroque architectural features including a colourful ornate ceiling and majestic columns which can also be lit up at night to match you colour theme. The entrance doors face three stunning stained glass windows that illustrate the history of Colchester since 1066. Not to mention the working organ which you can have playing during your ceremony should you wish. We prepare the room so it is perfect for your needs, whether it be theatre-style for a ceremony, fully-seated cabaret-style dining for your wedding breakfast, or informally for a buffet reception.
The Council Chamber
One of the most distinctive rooms in the Town Hall, the circular Council Chamber is adorned with fine paintings, murals, stained glass windows and a glorious painted dome ceiling showcasing a classical depiction of the twelve months of the year. It echoes the feel of a church primarily due to the stained glass windows and the wooden pew-like seating. It makes an excellent and unique setting for wedding and commitment ceremonies for 80 guests or under.
The Grand Jury and West Committee Room
The luxurious Grand Jury Room opens onto the West Committee Room and both are decorated with original oil paintings, illuminous spherical chandeliers, and Colchester’s Mayoral Regalia, including the Borough Mace used by the Town Serjeant for major civic events. The historical aesthetics of this suite make a superb setting for smaller celebrations, seating around 56 for a wedding breakfast or 85 for a wedding ceremony. It can be combined Mayor’s Parlour for an extra 10 guests, which is one of our most popular choices for a wedding ceremony. Please see below for more information.
The Mayor’s Parlour and use of the Balcony
If you choose to extend the Grand Jury and West Committee Suite by hiring the Mayor’s Parlour, you’ll feel like absolute Royalty when you step onto the Mayor’s Balcony. This setting offers a dream photo opportunity, towering above Colchester High Street cascading below. Best of all, its use is granted personally by the Mayor of Colchester and secured wholly by a donation to the Mayor’s charities.
