The feel
Chatelherault was built 250 years ago as a hunting lodge and summer-house for the Dukes of Hamilton. Designed by the famous Scottish architect William Adam, it is set on an eye-catching hilltop site just south of Hamilton. It was origianlly at the end of a Grand Avenue of trees that ran from Hamilton Palace as part of a ‘Great Design’ for the landscape planned by Duchess Ann.
Chatelherault is a country park, visitor centre and restored building, all in one. What was the Kennels for the Duke’s hunting dogs has been converted into a modern visitor centre, shop, cafe, display gallery, and contains exhibitions on the area’s history and wildlife, and the story of Chatelherault itself. Visitors can see the Duke’s private Banqueting Room and apartments, and the formal parterre gardens restored to their former glory.
The Banqueting Room is an ornate and sumptious setting for your civil or religious wedding, with spectacular views across the Clyde Valley. Small receptions may also be held within this room.
Unusual and quiet venue yet only minutes from the M74.
