With the Cumbrian hills visible in every direction and Windermere, England’s longest lake, stretching away before it, Ambleside is rustic romance writ large. ..Show More

Strange, then, that until the 19th century the area was thought of as a wilderness, though if you want to get away from the crowd (or reception!) you only need to walk for a few minutes to be surrounded by some of our most beautiful countryside. Or you could take one of the old ferries if you’d rather enjoy the views without all the exercise. The village itself has a decidedly cosy feel, though not sleepy – too many pubs and inns for that adjective to hold good – and with the delightful Bridge House over Stock Ghyll it can do quirky and characterful too. Ambleside has inspired numerous artists and poets, not least William Wordsworth who worked here and lived nearby, so as a wedding venue you can hope to tap into that creative energy and atmosphere, and with its famous rush-bearing ceremony in July the place reaches back to a medieval past giving a rootedness that is another element couples may wish to feel linked to. ..Show Less
