Buying engagement gifts for your friends or family can be a tricky ordeal. So, whether you’re a friend or family member looking for some gift inspiration, or you’re looking for quirky ideas for your own engagement, we thought we’d put together a few (that’s an understatement) of our favorite engagement gifts ideas for 2022, to give you a helping hand. And they’re even split into different categories depending on your budget!
But first, here is some gifting etiquette advice from the professionals (and us):
What Is Engagement Gifting Etiquette?
As with any wedding experience, you’ll be surprised to know that engagement gift etiquette does actually exist! Although many couples don’t expect you to stick to it, Debby Mayne from The Spruce says there are a few etiquette tips you should keep in mind when shopping for someone’s engagement, and they are as follows:
- Honour the Couple’s Wishes: This one is important, as some couples may not want a gift as part of their engagement. Some like cash donations to donate to a charity of their choice or to put towards their own wedding fund. To many, showing your face is more than enough.
- Buy An Appropriate Gift: If you do decide to buy a gift for the couple in question, make sure to buy them a gift appropriate for the occasion that’s relevant too of course. If you’re at an engagement party, perhaps save the more embarrassing presents for a more private occasion (unless the couple doesn’t mind). We’re sure they’ll be very thankful they didn’t have to open that embarrassing gift in front of granny!
- Bring a Gift For the Host/Hostess: This really only applies if you’re going to an engagement party, but if the couple has asked you not to bring a gift, bring something for the party e.g. snacks, drinks that everyone can enjoy. That way, you don’t have to turn up to the party empty-handed after all!
And as a little piece of advice from us to you – keep in mind the relationship you have with the happy couple. If they’re close friends or family, there’s a lot more you can get away with (buying sex toys is only funny when you know the couple and can guess the way they’ll react to it). Whereas, it’s probably best to stick to the basics with distant friends or acquaintances!
As already mentioned, every couple is different, so we’re not suggesting that this is what every newly engaged couple wants. However, they’re always good rules to stick by if you’re unsure of your gifting skills!
How Much Should You Spend On Engagement Gifts?
This all depends on the relationship you have with the couple in question. According to Engagement Gifts ie., it also depends on whether they live together or not. As they mention, there’s no point in spending money on a toaster if only one of them can use it! There’s a wide range of gifts to choose from available online at various price points for you to browse. Ultimately, there isn’t a clear answer to this question, other than it would be nice to spend that little bit more on the couple if you are close to them. But money isn’t everything, and if you haven’t got the budget to spend, then don’t stress, there are always sales to look at if need be to suit lots of different preferences!
We spoke to Liz from Crafty Creations about the kind of things the average person should expect to buy or look out for when purchasing an engagement gift, here’s what they had to say:
“When choosing an engagement gift it is always important to think about the couple themselves. Similar to wedding gifts you can run the risk of buying them something they already have. Couples often already share a home and so often have all the essentials they need. Sometimes the best gifts can have a personal touch. Maybe a personalised frame, glass set or even something as simple as a personalised bottle of alcohol”
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves, personalised gifts are always a great option when it comes to engagement gifts, and if you’re strapped for cash, they can also be a great cost-effective alternative. And has some fabulous personalised gift options on her website if you’d like to have a look!
