When it comes to engagement rings, finding the right piece of jewellery for your partner can be a daunting process. Especially as there are so many fantastic options to choose from nowadays! But, if there’s one thing we know, it’s that stepping away from the traditional diamond ring is becoming more and more popular. And one shape that has taken the wedding jewellery industry by storm is the Oval Engagement Ring. But what are they, and why are they so popular?
Here’s our Ultimate Guide (plus some of our favourite pieces) to Oval Cut Engagement Rings:
As much as we love wedding jewellery of all shapes and styles, it’s not exactly our strong point! So we reached out to Diamond Treats (@DiamondTreatsUK on Twitter), an online jewellery store run by Saytan Jewellery, a family ran business established in 1982, and asked them to enlighten us regarding the ins and outs of oval engagement rings. This is what they had to say:
Q. What Is an Oval Engagement Ring?
A. An Oval Engagement Ring is a ring with an Oval Shaped centre stone, or cluster of stones. Traditionally, the oval cut was the most prevalent. When cutting a rough stone, the goal of the stone cutter was to minimise waste and maximise the weight, hence most gemstones will have an oval cut. Since diamonds have become more fashionable, the brilliant cut has become more popular. Again that is due to the shape of rough diamonds, they are a formed in a cube like shape, so to maximise weight and minimise waste, the best cuts are usually to cut 2 round stones in every rough stone.
We couldn’t have put that any better! Whilst we see the traditional circular diamond ring as tradition, it seems that opting for an oval shaped engagement ring is a blast from the past too, but with a twist! And what’s so lovely is that you can get them in a wide ride of gemstones too, from sapphires to emeralds!
Q. How Much Do Oval Engagement Rings Cost?
A. The price of oval engagement rings will vary depending on the size of the stone, and whether someone will opt for diamonds or coloured stones. But starting prices would be from 500 pounds upwards.
Like any engagement ring, depending on the quality of the gemstone used and of the band it sits on, prices may vary. But no matter what your wedding budget may be (a few of our favourites are even cheaper than £500), there’s a wide range of fantastic ring to choose from, designed especially for you!
Q. Are Oval Engagement Rings Less Expensive?
A. Fancy cut diamonds are generally less expensive than round diamonds, and it has nothing to do with the diamonds themselves and all to do with supply and demand. Personally, we love fancy cut diamonds. But when it comes to coloured stones, the shape has no effect on the price, the price will depend on the colour, size and clarity. One classic example of an oval shaped coloured engagement ring would be Kate Middleton’s engagement ring.
Well if they’re good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge then they’re good enough for us! And it’s also great to know that less expensive doesn’t equal worse quality – most of the time it depends on supply and demand (which actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it). There are a wide variety of oval shaped rings available, and they’re stocked by most jewellers, so you can imagine how much the prices can vary!
Q. Why Do Oval Engagement Rings Appear Larger?
A. Oval rings may appear larger, because the stone is usually set lengthwise, and thus compliments the shape of our fingers. And very often, oval-shaped stones are set with a halo or cluster of diamonds around.
If there’s one thing we know, it’s that no one ever complained about their diamonds being too big! And if having an oval-shaped engagement ring means the gemstone tends to appear larger, we wouldn’t say no!
